Teeth Straightening
Want Straighter Teeth? Here’s How…
Don’t go another day feeling self-conscious about your smile – straightening can help keep your teeth healthy, clean and give back your confidence. Because a smile is a curve that sets everything straight.
Benefits Of Teeth Straightening
This easy treatment can correct your teeth and give you a beautiful straight smile without changing your tooth structure. With several different options to choose from, teeth can be straightened in as little as a few months.
Orthodontics is not just braces for children and teenagers anymore. It can also often be part of the process to start creating your new smile.
Crooked teeth are very difficult to clean, making them more prone to decay and gum disease. Although we can align your teeth with crowns and veneers, Dr Berera may suggest some initial straightening to ensure that your porcelain work will last as long as possible without any potential complications.
Initial straightening may also be necessary if you want to replace a missing tooth with a dental implant. You may have also lost a tooth a while ago, causing surrounding teeth to drift and move into the gap. In order to place an implant, there needs to be enough space between the teeth. Orthodontics can easily regain the space that you need to place your implant and restore your mouth back to its full potential.
Why You Should Choose To Straighten Your Teeth
It is a natural and healthy way to achieve a perfect smile
Crooked teeth make it harder to clean your teeth, leaving your gums prone to infections. Orthodontics will give you healthier and happier gums
It is easy to get decay in teeth which are overlapped and crooked. By straightening your teeth, you can floss and your tooth brush can reach all of the tooth surfaces, leaving them healthier and less likely to get decay
Orthodontics can help with jaw problems by correcting your bite
Correcting your bite can also help you to chew
It can prevent uneven wear on your teeth by correcting incorrect bites such as cross bites, over and under bites on your back and front teeth
Orthodontics can close the spaces of missing teeth, resulting in a more even bite. It may also open a space of a missing tooth so it can be replaced successfully with a dental implant
Protruding teeth are more likely to get damaged with activities and during sports.
The Procedure
Orthodontic treatment requires a thorough examination to check your bite and oral health. Your mouth must be in a healthy state before braces can be placed to avoid any further problems during treatment, so a clean and some dental work may need to be done first.
Once you have decided to proceed with orthodontic treatment, Dr Berera will take some initial records so that she can plan your case carefully. These will include some study models, photos and X-rays. From here she will put together a plan for you and discuss all of the treatment options which could be suitable for you. During the second consultation, she will confirm which treatment you feel most comfortable with and all of the costs and appointments involved to achieve your optimum results.
Once braces have been placed, the risk of dental decay and gum problems may arise due to the placement of the brackets. Dr Berera strongly advises a regular maintenance routine and oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy once your teeth are straight and your braces are removed.
Dr Berera enjoys orthodontics as part of her general practice, and is able to offer a few different options:

-
Perfect for adults wanting an invisible straightening solution, Invisalign uses a series of custom-made removable aligners that gradually move your teeth to the ideal position. Click here for more information.

For some adults who are not keen on the look of metal braces and when clear aligners are not suitable, cfast is often another good option. They are a quick and discreet alternative to straighten teeth in as little as 3-9 months. They are recommended for adults who are interested in straightening only their front six teeth – upper, lower or both arches. As the brackets are made of ceramic and the wires are white coated, these cosmetic braces look good as they straighten your teeth.
However as these braces will only correct the front six teeth, they are not recommended for patients who are after bite correction. It is a cosmetic procedure, so Dr Berera may advise full orthodontics to adults who have malocclusions and bite problems.

You may have had braces before, or just noticed that your teeth are becoming a little more crowded as you are getting older. There are instances when only a small amount of straightening needs to be done, in a short period of time.
Lingual braces, or ‘inside braces’, are attached to the inside surface of your front eight teeth. You may choose to have just your top teeth aligned, or just the bottom, or both. Lingual braces work much the same as conventional braces, but from behind your teeth, which means no-one’s the wiser. If small, fast corrections are what’s needed, this is a good option.

There is still a place for traditional metal braces in today’s orthodontic landscape. A thorough assessment of your bite and smile by Dr Berera will ensure the right method is chosen for you to achieve the optimal result.
